Philadelphia, allow him to reintroduce himself- his name is Michael Lorenzen. The newly acquired Phillie, Lorenzen, introduced himself to his new hometown crowd in Philadelphia, in the most dazzling of ways, by tossing a no-hitter in just his second start with the club.
Michael Lorenzen couldn't have had a better home debut for Philly, after being traded from the Tigers. Lorenzen threw just the 14th no-hitter in Phillies' franchise history. A marvelous performance under the lights. Lorenzen became the first pitcher to no-hit the Washington Nationals since the clubs' move from Montreal. The Nationals entered Wednesday owning the longest active streak of any franchise without being no-hit. It wasn't an easy feat, Lorenzen sure had to work for it as it took 124 pitches to get into the history books. His 124 pitches, a career high, are the most by any pitcher in a game this season, & the most in a solo no-hitter since Mike Fiers' threw 131 in 2019. It wasn't perfect, but it was special nonetheless.
The air turned real special as Lorenzen made his walk to the mound to take the 9th, engrossed in the passion of Philadelphia fans roaring for him to complete a no-hitter. A moment that Michael considers the coolest moment of his baseball career and a boost to finish history:
The crowd was electric, that's a Philly Thing. Lorenzen's Vans cleats had to help with the boost, too. The cat had to enter the history books with some swagger, cha heard. History is exactly what transpired as the crowd of 30,406 erupted when Lorenzen retired Dominic Smith on a flyball to end his first career complete game and secure his no-no. Lorenzen flipped his cap backward; flipped the hair; and launched himself to be mobbed by his teammates in a rowdy and epic celebration near the plate. The final out:
The two gals the camera kept cutting to, that is his mother and wife. I love seeing those awesome family moments, they sure are proud of him. Great stuff. What a moment for Lorenzen. In just his second game since being trade... goosebumps. Lorz became the first Phillies pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Cole Hamels on July 25, 2015, against the Chicago Cubs. Lorenzen also became the fourth pitcher over the past 30 seasons to throw a no-hitter within his first two games pitched for a franchise. What a trade for Philly, and it's only been two games.
This has been an incredible year for Lorenzen. He makes his first All-Star appearance with the Tigers in a career year, within only the first half of baseball. Then he gets dealt to a playoff contender in the Phillies, and proves right off the finger tips that he is worth the investment. Philadelphia desperately needed his type of an arm for a final push here in August and September- to possibly follow up last year's Cinderella story with another special tale.
What a big time performance from Lorenzen. He is proving to be a top nominee for Comeback Player of the Year. Already 2-0 for the Phillies, he is hoping to build off this no-no and be a big piece to a potential playoff berth. Check out my favorite angle of the final out:
