Time is running out! Hunting season is soon to close with playoff hunters nearing the final five laps to go with a chance to secure a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs hanging on the line. All eyes are on the final Wild-Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Hockey fans are gettin' the GOODS. A six-way race on each turn; with two rows; three-wide- ready and able to make a major slipstream. We are about to get a photo-finish.
What a battle this has turned into for the final Wild-Card spot, especially between Washington, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia (don't count out Buffalo and Jersey). Back and fourth, back and fourth they go. Capitals and Flyers have lost some MAJOR momentum and points as the Red Wings and Penguins continue to capitalize off the latter's downfall.
Washington is ridin' a 6-game losing skid; Philadelphia a 7-game losing skid. Both Metro' clubs are takin' major damage against the wall while the others slipstream past them in the standings. Here are how things look as we race towards the final handful of games:
Detroit currently holds the final spot with the tiebreaker (more wins) over the Penguins. Those two have just a one point lead over the Caps and Flyers. One point! We are lined up to see even more shuffling; with the schedj ready to add some fireworks as the final hoorah. Starts tonight. Capitals versus Wings; two points up for the taking. Plus the third of four battles of New York goes down tonight, which has stakes more important than inner-city braggin' rights with the Islanders only holding a two point lead over the Flyers, whom play the basement Habs tonight. Gets better. Red Wings play the Caps tonight, then take on the Penguins on Thursday. These teams have to run through each other if they want that spot. Hockey fans couldn't ask for anything more. Playoffs have already started for this bunch.
Second year in a row the Eastern Conference Wild-Card race is poppin' off in noise. This one here should finish in even more exciting fashion in comparison to the last. Red Wings better strap up. They are fortunate to hold the final spot again as they are just 5-11-2 since the beginning of March. Final chance; they can't choke this one away. Hockey gods are blessing them by putting their chances in their own hands (for the most part), with the two games against the Caps and Pens. Philly and DC are also fortunate. They are fortunate to still be able to snatch the final spot despite being on multi-game losing skids. It's who wants it more. Simple as that. We are soon going to find that out.
The rest of the playoff picture on the ice is mostly complete. Blues still have some hope, but they need the defending champion Golden Knights and Kings to choke their spots away. It's a difficult ask, especially with how both Vegas and LA are playing since the second week of March. Our focus is mostly on that Eastern Wild-Card race. Tonight's game in Detroit, and Thursday's game in Pittsburgh is must-watch TV. Run it up!
