Tuesday was a normal and quiet day for most people across the globe. However, it was not a normal day for three particular stud athletes. Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs; Chargers QB Justin Herbert; and Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown woke up like it was Christmas in July. All three players spent their Tuesday richer and dancin' around to Juice; Nicki; and Jeffrey's "Money" track as money, money, money makes their world go 'round.
When you put the three contracts in one value- it totals up to nearly $670Ms. Money galore. This came the same day that a Saudi group offered futbol phenom, Kylian Mbappé, $760Ms to play for one season. Everyone wanted to talk money. There is crazy money in the world of sports. All three contracts have very interesting breakdowns and tidbits. Lets start with the largest one:
Jaylen Brown is doing the biggest money dance: Celtics and Brown have agreed to a massive, five-year, $304 million supermax contract extension. Marking the deal the richest deal in NBA history. Fully guaranteed, with a trade kicker and no player option. Wowza.
Brown was eligible for a supermax extension thanks to his All-NBA honors last season and now cashes in, becoming the highest paid player in league history (for now). With a new TV deal looming and revenue at an all-time high, the cap is expected to jump 10% annually for the foreseeable future, but this is a big win for Jaylen and his agent Jason Glushon. The Celtics get a win with the no player option in the final year whereas Brown/Glushon win with the total salary and trade kicker. With a Jayson Tatum extension looming, and knowing the supermax is now to go up more- is this a sketchy deal for the Celtics?
Brown has obvious turnover issues and showed streaky shooting during last year's playoff run. The streaky play pointed out a flaw extreme enough to have legitimate criticism. The flaw being he can't handle the ball with his left hand of course. Those are your cons with Jaylen Brown. The pros weigh high. Brown has been a pivotal part to the Celtic's success, despite no rings to account for it. He will be 28 when his supermax kicks in, those are prime years. Brown has gotten his payday, now he is a player ready to move past his faults and flaws to reach his full potential. To reach the potential of the supermax he just signed. Any super max contract is a risk. Any big dollar contract in any of the Big 4 sports, is a risk. Just the name of the game. I am glad the Celtics put their chips in on Brown and believe he is deserving of the super max. They are now fully invested in a "win now" way of operating. All eyes are on Brown to lead them to the promise land. Congrats, Jaylen.
The Dallas Cowboys have inked their All-Pro cornerback, Trevon Diggs, for the long term. Diggs and Dallas agree on a five-year, $97 million deal that could be worth up to $104 million in incentives when all is set and done. The deal makes Diggs the fifth highest value amongst his peers at corner. Dallas is happy to keep their ballhawk around. Check out how his contract ranks in terms of AAV amongst the top CBs:
Diggs now gets paid the value he claims on the field. At 24, Diggs already has an All-Pro and two Pro Bowl seasons under his belt after his first three seasons in the league. The 6-foot-2 prototype corner has already tallied 17 interceptions and 49 pass breakups including a league leading, 11 picks in 2021. Diggs has arguably been the best ball-hawk in the league since his arrival, making this an easy decision for executive VP Stephen Jones. Very easy.
Diggs may have had 8 fewer picks last season, but he was much more consistent and all around better as a corner in advanced stats and understanding. 2021 he led the league in interceptions, but also gave up the most yards in 1 on 1. Everyone degraded Diggs for this, questioning his "elite" status. Diggs sharpened his game in 2022, which helped Dallas in having the eighth best pass defense and the most takeaways total as a defense in the NFL last season. Now with the addition of All-Pro CB Stephon Gilmore, I expect Diggs to get back to his turnover numbers and be even better on the outside for Dallas in the trenches. A must need extension if you are a Cowboys fan. What I like the most? The Cowboys paid Diggs handsomely, but still put the ball in his hands for making the highest amount at corner. The contract might sit tied for 5th, but if Diggs hits on all the incentives- the $104 million will be the highest total value of ANY cornerback. Very good deal for both.
Justin Herbert gets PAID. The Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert agreed to a monumental five-year, $262.5 million extension. The new contract lands Herbert as the second-highest paid signal caller behind, Patrick Mahomes. Not only that, Herbert now has the highest average annual value ($52.5M) and the second-highest total in guaranteed money with $218M guaranteed (Watson-$230M). Herb is counting his blessings... literally.
Lamar Jackson was the highest paid player (AAV) for three months... before Herbert swooped in to claim the top spot. At the right time, for that matter. With the Joe Burrow extension looming in Cincinnati, the Chargers HAD to lock Herbert up long term prior to Burrow. Had to. If not, then they spend even more on Herb. Perfect timing in extending one of the best young quarterbacks in the game.
Herbert completed 68.2 percent of his passes for 4,739 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, which finished up his worst statistical season of his career. That's right, his worst! The cat will just keep getting better and better. Something I stated in his draft profile. I think that now more than ever, as Herbert and co now have a new OC in Kellen Moore to help elevate the Chargers offense even more. I predict Herbert and Moore to be a match in heaven. Moore has twice had the league's No. 1 offense in terms of yards per game as an offensive coordinator and also led the NFL's highest scoring offense in 2021. Moore can balance things out, as he had success in the run and pass games. I consider Moore a top OC and the move to bring him back was great.
They have their franchise QB inked long term. Now they can fully focus on the small things and focus on building the right roster around him. I expect the Chargers to be back in the top 4 or 5 of AFC contenders this year. Herbert now has big expectations to fulfil- something he thrives off of. Buckle up AFC West! Here is how the QBs fair now after the Herb deal:
