Pipe Bomb: NFL Rule Change

NFL News - Spittin' Cap

As my few followers on X know by now, I have quite to say on the NFL owners approving the rule proposal to ban the hip-drop tackle. Yeah, that just went down this morning if you haven't got outside the rock yet. What an utterly awful decision by the NFL, the owners, and Rich McKay's competition committee. "Competition" committee... riiiiight. They are ruining the game we love. Business(wo)men and trust fund babies are ruining the prestige that makes up this beautiful game, while the players association sits back and continues to allow it to happen.

It feels like it's one thing after another. You can't hit the quarterback, you can't touch a receiver, and god forbid if you lay the wood on an opposing player. Now you can't tackle from the hip down?

They were quick to ban that, but look the other way whenever complaints arise from the shi**y artificial turf. Go figure. I think this is just terrible and pure blasphemy to the prestige of the game. The players (and NFLPA) were against the rule change, and the committee went about it anyways. Despicable. Troy Vincent I thought better of you. Same goes to Mike Tomlin, Sean McDermott, and Sean McVay, who are the only three non front office heads in the competition committee. All four guys are guys I thought understood, respected, and enjoyed the game. Rather on the sidelines, or on the field (Vincent). Voting for the rule change has changed my feelings toward them. Despite the amount of degrade I want to point at them for their decision- it's the NFLPA that gets most of my degrade and blame.

The NFLPA, led by newly named President Jalen Reeves-Maybin, needs to step up and grow some stones. They can't continue to allow the owners to rule over the game like a damn dictatorship. I'm not saying go on strike again, but push your voice a little harder than just writing a weak a** memo that you are against the rule change. Create some kind of defense for yourselves and the game you make up. The game we all love. Banning the hip-drop tackle is bad for football. Bad for real football. They are taking defense and aggression out of football. They want offense with no contact. They want flag-football. Step up NFLPA and stop this madness. We are oh-so-close to adapting to this newfound, nasty, way. Fight!

The rule change can have major impact on the 2024-25 season. Not only is it crazy to demand a player to tackle a certain way in bang-bang full speed action, but the fact they are instituting a 15-yard penalty on top of it, sets up more game results to be controversial and flat out doomed. That's right, 15-yards and an automatic first-down. This will cause confusion to the players, coaches, officials, and fans. Just how the NFLPA stated it would. If I am Rob Gronkowski, I am unretiring this instant. Seriously! How are guys going to tackle the big, fast, and agile tight-ends/wideouts? How about Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, or any cat with massive quads like Jalen Hurts? Get realistic. Imagine the league in the Alstott, Crumpler, and Gronk days not having the hip-drop tackle. You can't!

Will players be able to tackle an offensive player from behind? I can't see it happening with this rule change. The only chase-down tackle possible is the sweep of the feet. Ooo that's very "effective" against elite professional athletes with skill positions that require elite balance and agility. I feel bad for defensive players. They are at a constant disadvantage. Not only that, but their disadvantages will weaken the quality of games in full retrospect. I am totally against the rule change and the owners' constant power swing. Many players are right there with me:
