All hail The Reaper! Whittaker put on another excellent performance Saturday, beating Kelvin Gastelum by a one-sided unanimous decision (50-45) in the main event of UFC Fight Night Vegas 24. Reaper Rob put on a masterclass striking performance against a game Gastelum. Rob beautifully mixed up his striking throughout the 5 rounds, with stellar combos and dominating footing; he was unstoppable to beat on Saturday. Shoutout to Gastelum though, he once again showed his chin & despite being far down on the scorecard, he bit down on the mouth piece and moved forward on a dominant Reaper.
Whittaker was literally flawless. Rob pieced up Gastelum with combos and a slick variety of striking- it was spectacular to witness. Whittaker's dominant night in my opinion is the second best striking performance, all around, this year, along with Holloway's back in January. The counters! The jabs! The Reaper! It was spectacular. The numbers show some justice.
Whittaker out landed Gastelum in significant strikes 150-62, and 115 of those from Whittaker were to the head. Rob landed a variety of flush strikes to the chin of Gastelum, including a front kick, his trademark GnP & electric jabs. It was the best that I have seen from Whittaker. His takedown defense is elite, his reversals and counters were that of another stratosphere & he was flawless on the ground as he had control of just about the entire fight. Whittaker that night, is a tough task for ANY top fighter on the planet... including the giant one he has in his sights.
The Reaper says it's time he gets another shot to regain his Middleweight title, calling out the champ & the man who ripped that title away from him; Israel Adesanya. The champ had obvious eyes on Whittaker all night on Saturday, watching what is hoping to be his next title defense.
Rob took the banter with a nod and a request; run it back Down Under in the Stadium. I think we need it, and if we get the Reaper that we got Saturday against Gastelum, then we will be in for one hell of a ride. I need to hear that Aussie roar, here is what Rob had to say about a potential rematch post-Gastelum fight:
