Saturday night's main-event was... to put it gently; interesting. It was a Middleweight bout between Derek Brunson and Kevin Holland that had some excitement, especially excitement towards the rising challenger Kevin Holland, after his masterful year in 2020.
A hardcore UFC spectator knew coming into that fight that Holland has mega power and can show it off in unique ways. Which made it obvious that his opponent Derek Brunson, would have to use his wrestling skills to steer away from that power and dominate on the ground in order to win. It was the behavior that Holland showed most of the fight that raised the eye brows.
Holland who hoist the nickname "Big Mouth", did his usual yapping throughout the fight. I personally love his banter & feel it is a great tool for him to use to get his opponents head all rattled. The issue with his talking on Saturday... he was talking waaaaaay more than he was fighting. Some people felt annoyed & bewildered by it. Most of the fight was Brunson dominating Holland on the ground as Holland showed no defense, instead he would just laugh and crack jokes. It was weird to be honest and did not make Uncle Dana very pleased, as Dana thought it out to be a mental breakdown from Holland.
I don't really think "Big Mouth" will be seeing a main-event any time soon. Not saying it wasn't hilarious... especially the Khabib thing. But no one really wants to see that in a UFC Main-Event, especially when it has title shot aspirations and is a fight for the rankings. That would be some great WWE sh** Kevin, maybe you wanna give them a call.
To quickly touch on Brunson, he isn't a boring fighter in any book cmon. Yes he is a leg hugger, but he is no Usman or Khabib. Brunson brings electricity to many of his bouts and has always been a decent to good attraction, but his performance versus Holland wasn't all that great (Holland was just that bad). Brunson almost got knocked out in two separate occasions against Holland. I love the Costa call out, perfect fight for both, and Brunson can get a easy dub. But after watching him somehow still struggle with Holland, doesn't give me hope for Derek against the other top contenders like Whittaker, Cannonier, Till or the Joker. Costa is a perfect fight, book it, but don't let Holland's bad night twist any strings.
