One of the best kick-starters is when you get motivation from others. Rather a stranger; friend; loved one; or an opponent- motivation and support can be a major kickstart for a person looking to elevate and get stronger. After a lackluster 3/5 of the season, the Philadelphia Phillies' faithful showed support to Trea Turner with a standing ovation to attempt to lift his spirits and confidence. Turner is now the hottest player in baseball since this standing ovation on August 4th:
Trea is scorching hot in every fashion of the game as he finally begins to live up to his mega 11/YR, $300M contract signed in the off-season. Trea's MLB rankings since the ovation:
Batting Average: .388 (3rd)
On Base Percentage: .430 (6th)
Slugging Percentage: .820 (1st)
On Base + Slugging Percentage: 1.251 (1st)
Hits: 54 (3rd)
Homeruns: 16 (1st)
Runs Batted In: 41 (1st)
Total Bases: 114 (1st)
The cat refuses to be tamed. Trea's power at the plate is the biggest eye catcher, even hitting big ones in late innings. Turner now joins Troy Tulowitzki ('10 - Rockies) as the only shortstops in MLB history to hit 10 home runs in 11 games. He became only the second Phillies player ever to do so, joining the Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt ('76). The ovation elevated him to another stratosphere on the diamond, and in the nick of time for the Phillies.
On top of his heatwave at the plate, he is quietly doing something on the base pads that rarely has been seen, and can even make MLB history. You don't hear about it with Ronald Acuna being close to 70 stolen bases on the season: but the Phillies' speedster, Turner, is a perfect 27-for-27 on steal attempts this year, giving Trea a chance to make history. If Turner goes the rest of the season without getting thrown out, then he'll set a new MLB record for most stolen bases in a season without being caught stealing. Turner has stolen 31 straight steal attempts dating back to last season. Vince Coleman holds the MLB record with 50 straight stolen bags across the 1989 and 1990 seasons. History is possible for the speedster with two records sittin' for his takin'.
Trea Turner's resurgence in the past two months has been at a needing time for the Phillies as they continue to hold strong at the top of the NL Wild Card with enemy forces movin' closer. It's crazy how the little things can completely alter a narrative. That's what happened with that standing ovation.
The Phillies getting in the playoffs with a red-hot Trea Turner, with how last year went, is scary for the NL, believe it or not. I know they just lost 5 of 7 between the Marlins and Braves series- but playoff atmosphere will be different. Philadelphia's atmosphere last year was a big reason they fought in the Fall Classic. Having to face Schwarber-Turner-Harper-Realmuto in a loud Citizens Bank Park is going to be difficult- especially if those guys are hittin' moonshots. The pitchers will unravel. Look how support can make things better.
Trea Turner is stronger. The Phillies title hopes are stronger. Can they use his heatwave to spark the lineup in whole and be a problem for the NL, as the teams quest for the Fall Classic begins?
