One of the more beautiful things we get out of sports and its art is the nicknames proclaimed to sport's greatest characters and performers, nicknames that are cemented, immortalized, and remembered for decades and decades into the future. The Mamba. Real Deal Holyfield. The Mailman. The Big Hurt. The Great One... my goodness I could go all damn night, but you feel my drift. Nicknames in sports is what makes sports so damn awesome. Getting Moss'd on the playground or doing a little fade in the office trash can giving off a "Kobe"... sports baby.
We have nicknames that describe a player's character like "Mean" Joe Greene and "Primetime" Deon. We have nicknames that show swagger like Rod "He Hate Me" Smart and "The Answer" AI. Nicknames that show reference to immortality like "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe, Muhammad "The Greatest" Ali, and Michael "Air" Jordan. Then we have nicknames to glorify epic triumphs like "Too Tall" Ed Jones, "The Admiral" David Robinson, and my new induction; Alex "The Comeback" Smith after his incredible triumph from almost losing his leg in what was a Joe Theismann 2.0 type of injury. After 17 surgeries, a life-threatening infection, a lost season and months of grueling and remarkable rehab, Smith returned as a QB on a NFL field for the first time in just under 2 years. This man almost had his leg amputated and even almost lost his life... and then broke unthinkable barriers and roadblocks to eventually return to a NFL field at 37 years old as a starting Quarterback for a playoff contending team. I honestly can't think of any story like it... of any COMEBACK like it.
I hereby proclaim Alex Smith; The Comeback. His story rules over any prior comeback story. The grit and determination shown over a short span to not only keep his life and his leg, but return to a profession that less than 1% of this earth can do... it is absolutely incredible and aspiring as hell. We have seen some of the greatest athletes known to man and woman, who have lost careers and legacies because of injuries. Bo Jackson, Brandon Roy, Gale Sayers and Billy Simms just to name a few! Fierce competitors and men who just was beaten down to far. Alex Smith's return is one of the greatest triumphs in sports history and deserves something to remember it by for years to come. He is to be recognized by the NFL and the fans of the league as "The Comeback" for eternity. I also hereby tell the NFL to rename the "NFL Comeback Player of the Year" to the Alex Smith award; congratulating a player on the best comeback for that season.
Alex's comeback story has mad Neflix or Prime potential and will forever go down as one of the greatest stories in sports history and we have to recognize it more. We have to shed some love and light on his story. It is absolutely remarkable. I loved those books/magazines back in the late 90's and 2000's that had the sweet graphic books with player's nicknames, fun facts & quick stats. "The Comeback" would have been looking damn cool on some print back in the day. As I hope everyone is grinding the day away, but when time is freed; check out his comeback story if you don't know much about it. It is remarkable and deserves praise. Or wait a year for a new documentary comes out about it. Greatness. Triumph. Legacy. The Comeback- Alex Smith.
