AND STILL! Kamaru Usman demands the fight world to put respect on his name after a 3rd round knockout of friend turned foe, Gilbert Burns. The Nigerian Nightmare put down a major statement.
UFC 258 had a great card when it came to skills but all week long the card was felt as a "waste of money" because of the lack of "attraction/big names". The welterweight champ Kamaru Usman is considered to be the least raved champion and a bit boring because of his leg huggin', wrestling ways and the fact he has 9 decision wins on his record win streak. All that talk and maybe Dana showing him the PPV buys had set the wheels in motion for Usman to enter his bout against Burns, pissed off and ALL game.
Burns had rocked the champ very early in the first round but couldn't put him a way. We have seen this trend of the deeper a fighter gets in a Usman fight the better Usman becomes. That trend occurred once again. Usman worked Burns in RD2 just to set up his slaying early in round 3.

After a difficult opening round, the champ dug down deep and went right after Burns, completely working him in the second round. Usman landed several devastating jabs, two of which putting Burns on the canvas. Usman brought my guy to the deepest waters of the ocean and sunk his a**. The champ outlanded Burns 83-45 in significant strikes. It was the exact way Usman wanted and NEEDED to finish Burns. All week long the doubters (including myself) thought the only way the main-event could see a finish was if we heard "AND NEW"... the champ had other plans.
Usman's dub has moved him past the legendary GSP for the longest win streak in UFC welterweight history with 13 (GSP's final win was at middleweight). Usman is tied with Khabib Nurmagomedov for the second longest active streak in UFC behind Jon Jones and is tied for the 3rd longest streak in promotion history. The dub over Burns is now Usman's third successful title defense. The dub could do a lot for Usman and "his" division as he is swarming with confidence and the will to shut his haters up.
Going into the Usman v Burns bout I felt strong on the thought that Burns knocking Usman off his throne was what the welterweight division and UFC needed. Now after witnessing the "Nigerian Statement", that performance should lift Usman. The performance is what could spark his attraction and most importantly the performance will set up future title defenses into huge draws. Usman fighting with the feeling of disrespect, with the intent of finishing his opponents & ridin' such a long streak is a huge opportunity for the UFC and Uncle Dana. With the rise of Chimaev now being in the past (he's a h**- sorry not sorry), Leon Edwards desperately trying to fight and the King's callouts from Saturday night, the Welterweight division is finally ready to join in on the lightweight fun. LFG.
It's time for Leon to be placed in the light, it's time for Colby to be split open & it's time to see Usman put down the hugs. Oh and Nate Diaz might need CTE help, let's get it on!
The callout... getcho popcorn lads.
