Unicorn

MLB News - Spittin' Cap

One of a kind. Mythical. Undeniable. Shohei Ohtani is UNREAL.

Once again, the unicorn that is Shohei Ohtani has blessed the game of baseball; inventing a new prestigious club, in the grandest of ways possible. It's Shohei Ohtani, did we have any doubt? The 50/50 club is now active. Dodgers have a new single season home-run king. Baseball has an icon unlike anything seen before (suck it Babe Ruth). All hail the unicorn.

Last night, Ohtani delivered an offensive performance that will be raved about for decades; a performance for the history books. This dude couldn't just make history in a normal way. Couldn't just hit a homer and steal a bag to call it a night. Nah, the cat had to go out and go 6-for-6 with 3 homers, 10 runs batted in, 17 total bases, and 2 stolen bags. Ohtani didn't just take Shawn Green's Dodgers home-run record, he had to out-do Green's unreal 4-homer night in '02 on top of it. Ohtani joined Green as just the 7th player in MLB history to hit 17+ total bases in a single game:

Shohei Ohtani's epic night at the plate

Ohtani's performance was jaw-droppin'; leavin' us with some major goosebump moments to replay for eternity. So many broken records. Ohtani became the first player in MLB history with multiple home runs, multiple stolen bases, and five-hits in a game. He became the second player ever with six hits and five extra-base hits in a game, matching former Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green... and Ohtani is the first player ever with five extra-base hits and 10 RBIs in a game. Since RBI became official in 1920, only one player in MLB history has had, over the course of his entire career (different games or same), a game with 10+ RBI; a game with 6+ hits; a game with 5+ XBH; a game with 3+ HR; and a game with 2+ stolen bases... that one player being Ohtani, and the crazy cat did it all in one f'n game. Just unreal.

We are witnessing the rawest, most naturally gifted player the world of baseball has ever known. In consecutive seasons, Ohtani has logged in two of the greatest individual seasons of all-time, doing so in complete different ways. Last season, we witnessed the best dual-player season of all-time. Then this season, Ohtani has pitching taken away from him (Tommy John), so he goes and creates the 50/50 club, proving that he can literally do it all on the diamond. Proving that he is on pace to be the greatest baseball player ever (that talk comes far after a retirement). 50/50 club? Are we serious!? A year after winning MVP for stellar pitching AND batting! The unicorn is mythical.

Rarely do we see a player arrive to a certain stage, and we say "yup, he's about to game-break". On the diamond, we recently felt that with Bryce Harper in October when he hit that moonshot. Everyone knew if a ball came over the middle of that plate, it was gone. Sure enough- boom. Same thing happened last night with Ohtani. I knew he was going yard after hitting that 49th to tie Green's record. Just knew it; and I am sure there is a MASS of peeps who felt that same energy. The people inside LoanDepot sure as hell knew it. Number 50 brought goosebumps. You can catch it at the end. To witness a player like Ohtani is just a pure blessing for baseball fans. A pure natural of the sport.

Now, we are soon about to FINALLY have the pleasure of Ohtani takin' on playoff baseball in the Fall Classic. Perry Minasian took that away from us, but finally Ohtani in the Fall Classic is soon a reality. I am so pumped for it. World Baseball Classic was the tease... we have waited a long-long time for that tease to become a real thing on the grandest stage in the Fall Classic. Oh is it great to witness Ohtani make baseball history. Feel the goosebumps and relive Ohtani's epic game courtesy of MLB on X:
